Margaret Smith was brought up in South Shields but left the North East to become a primary school teacher in Northamptonshire. This is where Margaret settled, raised a family and taught in several primary schools over the years.
In 2012 Margaret took early retirement when her husband was appointed to a post at Durham University, enabling her to return ‘home’. The following year, she began volunteering at HMP Durham Visitors’ Centre, including the play area in the visits hall.
With a growing interest in the work of Nepacs, Margaret was pleased to become a trustee at the beginning of 2016. She is a member of the Nepacs’ Youth Steering Committee.
Margaret’s interests include reading, knitting, travelling, learning about many aspects of County Durham’s fascinating history and walking in the hills of Northumberland.
